5 Tips for nursing students in Australia

Thinking of becoming a nurse? You’re not alone. Nursing is a very popular career path for many international students.

Well, you’re in luck. Below are 5 Tips for Nursing Students in Australia.

1. DON’T HESITATE – BE BOLD AND GO FOR IT.

Studying a Diploma of Nursing is the most awesome experience I’ve ever had. It is certainly challenging and at times you might want to quit, but trust me, it’s definitely worth it! I moved out of my comfort zone, I challenged myself to become the best version of me. I am now proud to say that I am a nurse. I have upskilled and I have some great opportunities coming up. I can assure that your life will change for the better. The graduation ceremony was fantastic, it was nice to have that recognition at the end.

2. TEAM UP WITH YOUR CLASSMATES.

We created a little chat group with my classmates where we could exchange our work and struggles. Everyone had input and we always encouraged each other. When we couldn’t work out a solution, we would then go to our educators. I met some pretty amazing people along the way. We were all on the same boat so we understood each other struggles and everyone was very supportive. I even shared accommodation with a fellow student, and she was a big help. Sometimes when I would get really frustrated with drug calculations, she would tell me “pack it up! You have done enough for today.” (Whilst handing me a glass of wine!) I also made some lifelong friends whilst completing my Diploma.

3. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

I come from Tasmania and I studied in Adelaide so leaving my family for weeks was my biggest challenge. I managed to overcome this by keeping regular contact with them. My husband was, and still is, my biggest supporter. Even when he had a nephrectomy and had only been out of hospital for 10 days, he still encouraged me to go back to Adelaide and to finish my Diploma. I strongly wanted to defer as I felt that I needed to be there to look after him. But I stayed strong and I didn’t give up on my dream.

4. TRUST YOUR EDUCATORS.

The educators at Think Health Education were truly amazing. Nothing was ever too small or too big. They made everyone feel comfortable and very welcome. Drug calculations were my nightmare subject, my nurse educators were fantastic support, they offered me extra tuition and I eventually passed the test. I also had unconditional support from my Program Coordinator, Carol. She knew how complicated it was to travel from Tasmania to Adelaide so she would do everything she could possibly do to accommodate me with the timetable. I will be forever grateful!

5. MAKE A DIFFERENCE

I guess we all have a strong motivation to study nursing. My first husband passed away with a brain aneurysm and this is what really got me started. The nurse who looked after him and my family was so wonderful to us in what was one of the darkest moments in our lives that I wanted to give back to the community and be able to help others. And you, what’s your motivation?
