
How to apply for a Tax File Number TFN
After you arrive in Australia, there are a few things that you should finish immediately. One of those things to to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN).
A Tax file number (TFN) is a unique number issued by the Australian Taxation office (ATO) that you give to your employer. Your employer will give you a tax declaration form when you start work for you to fill out and you will need to put the number on the form. They will then pay tax to the tax office on your behalf.
What documents do you need to apply for TFN?
You’ll need
- a scanned copy of your passport,
- your bank statement with your name and your current address matching the details you provide on your application – transaction lists printed off the internet and credit card statements are not acceptable and
- current student identification card (only one – either tertiary or secondary) with your photo, issued from an Australian government accredited education authority
Once you have all these documents ready, you can apply for a tax file number FROM HERE . IT takes a minium of 10 days for you to recieve you TFN, but might take upto 28 days in somecase. Once you have received your TFN it’s important that you keep it and all your personal information secure to prevent identity theft.
