More than 60% international students without job
After months of quarantine and lock-down, countries are opening up slowly. And now, the effects of the pandemic are beginning to show.
On a survey conducted across Australia, the results have revealed that more than 60% temporary visa holders, mainly international students have lost their source of income in Australia.
Renata, an international student, who was working in a hotel lost her job because of the Corona virus pandemic. She has been in Australia for two years and would be completing her studies soon. However, since she lost her job, she mentioned that it has been hard for her to survive in Sydney.
The survey was conducted among 5000 temporary visa holders and more than 67% reported that they didn’t have a job. 34% did not have any money left to pay rent and 23% reported they were already sharing bedroom to reduce rent costs.
Another study conducted by UTS and UNSW report that the condition will only worsen in the coming months. And with Australia entering a recession after three decades, things are not looking good for international students.
