INTRODUCTION

I, Bibek , was born in Nepal on 11th Bhadra 2050 B.S. (27th of August 1993 A.D.) and have been living as a Nepalese citizen for past 23 years. Currently we are a family of five; my parents, grandmother and my loving wife. After the completion of my 4 years of Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, I have made a mindset to pursue Masters of Public Health Advanced as a post graduate degree at University of Wollongong, located at Northfields Ave, Wollongong, Australia.

Academic Background

Throughout my academic years, I’ve never failed to present myself as a creative individual. After my completion of School Leaving Certificate (S.L.C.) examination with distinction, my educational pathway was heavily influenced by my family members. My family insisted me to be a student belonging to science background. The course was tough and not so easy for me at first, but things started to change and I became more and more interested with the field. I planned long and hard to succeed in the field of science and overcame the problems I had with my academics, during my first year as an intermediate level student. However, the influence and pressure from my family did not stopped even after the completion of my intermediate level. They wanted me to study either engineer or medical science (M.B.B.S to be precise). But I failed miserably to do well on the entrance exams of these particular fields. Finally by taking suggestions from friends and family, I started my undergraduate studies by taking Microbiology as my major. During my first year of undergraduate level, I started to understand true meaning of learning. I was never costumed to studying independently. Teaching style was different from school and college and it gave me hard time to cope with the demand of the course. Gradually, I started to embrace the practice of self-learning and took aid of available resources regarding the subject matter via internet. My academics started to improve throughout the duration of 4 years of undergraduate studies, where on each year I performed better than the last. In my final year, with help of my supervisor Assoc. Prof. Dr. Binod Lekhak and Mr. Nabin Kishore Bimali I was able to conduct a small dissertation titled, “Microbial Analysis of Street Vended Foods of Kathmandu”. It was a thrilling experience as I got to learn in depth about the practicality of the subject matter, and was able to take away some essential soft skills. This propelled me back to being an “A” grade student as I finally scored a distinction on my final year and cleared my undergraduate degree with first division.

Why Masters of Public Health Advanced?

Public health is a globally recognized course and has wide spectrum of career opportunities. The ever changing health issues throughout the world, opens up many door ways for young youths who wants to thrive in this field and make a remarkable difference, to up lift health standards in their lives as well as improve the well-being of their community. Being a student of microbiology, we had to learn many organisms and their pathogenic invasion in our daily lives. During my 4 year course of microbiology, I got many opportunities to understand the depths of the origins of these diseases. To my surprise, almost all of the pathogenic microorganisms had one common cause of infection: our negligence towards a hygienic lifestyle. Washing your hands daily, keeping your surroundings and the place you live clean and comprehending the knowledge of a healthy meal; they all factored for one’s well-being. For a developing country like Nepal, such small ignorance has truly played a vital role in the degrading lifestyle of people. However, my realization towards the importance of such issues deepened, when I had my chance to prepare a dissertation for the final year of my studies.

My dissertation entitled, “Microbial Analysis of Street Vended Foods of Kathmandu, Nepal“, provided me the perfect platform to explore my interest towards public health. During our dissertation, we were suggested by our supervisor to take factors like vendor’s hygiene and work surroundings into consideration, as they too provided potent source for microbial contamination. Most of the vendors were poorly dressed and their vending stalls were not well maintained. Most of the vendors also chose places very close to dumps of garbage from local household. With foods of inspection openly exposed to such environment, the results were obvious. It solidified the phrase that, “prevention is better than cure”.

Studying and taking Public Health Advanced as a masters’ course will definitely give me the experience I need, to make a difference; with modules including subjects like, Health promotion, WHS risk management, Public health nutrition, etc. Given the duration of the course (2 years), I believe pursuing the field will assure great career opportunities. I will be able to learn the skills necessary to critically examine health issues and effectively implement them to sort out and sustain the problems. Public health personally for me, is more of a practical experience rather than text book knowledge. Being involved in such research oriented course will help me to enhance my capabilities as an individual to succeed in life both personally and professionally. With ample knowledge at hand via the desired course, I see myself embarking a journey to bring about a positive impact in lives of people who still face the consequences of many risks associated to health . But above all, my sole purpose to follow my educational career towards a degree in Public Health Advanced; is to mend myself into an individual with strong leadership potential that can lead his nation towards qualitative lifestyle.

Financial support for the duration of the course

For the entirety of my course, my parents and family members-in-law will be providing me with the necessary financial aid. My father, Mr. Bipin Kafle is a shareholder of Charumati Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd with 15% share in the company and receives additional benefits throughout the year. Likewise, my mother Mrs. Cheena Kumari Karki, works as a marketing supervisor in the same company. Annual income of our family is a total of $21729 AUD (as per 1 AUD = NRs. 79.96).

Similarly, my wife’s family members are also well established. My father-in-law Mr. Basu Ram and brother-in-law Mr. Sudarshan are employed as Nepali teacher in Cosmopolitan English Boarding School and as a senior lecturer in Kathmandu Engineering College respectively. Furthermore, my sister-in-law Mrs. Amrita works as a full time nurse at Grande International Hospital, while my mother-in-law Mrs. Devaki is a landlord of the house situated at Pasikot-5, Budanilkantha. With sound financial income of $21729 AUD (as per 1 AUD = NRs. 79.96) per year, they too will fully support me on my future endeavors without any form of hesitation.

Furthermore, for the purpose of fees mentioned on my received offer letter, my father shall pay the tuition fees and health covers from the bank balance of $68,784.39 (as per 1 AUD = NRs. 79.96), which was maintained through land sell, at the amount of mentioned before.

Why Australia and not Nepal or other countries like US and Canada?

Why not Nepal? – has been an easy answer for every Nepalese candidate. But the honest answer still remains the same. The education system as well as practical exposure for any given course has always been unsatisfactory. Without the practicality of the course, a student can never truly learn or get much needed experience, to shape up his future. Speaking of countries like US, Canada or even other European countries like Norway: they all lacked few things compared to Australia which can be crucial for any international student.

Studying abroad can be intimidating and overwhelming for many students. Going far away from your home nation can put any individual at a psychological disadvantage. But, in compare to nations like U.S.A and European countries; Australia truly stands out as a safe, multicultural and heartily welcoming nation for many current or prospective international students. This factor not only eliminates problems like being home sick but also opens up doors for students from all around the world; to learn and grow together in a diverse study environment. Another purpose of abroad education for any student is to have the best and higher form of learning, which is exactly why I choose Australia for my master’s degree. With institutions and universities providing world class facilities to students, Australia reflects itself as the best destination for abroad education endeavors. Many universities of Australia falls under world class educational institutes, which add up as a strong reputation that attracts more individuals like me. Aside from quality education providers and research oriented coursework, Australia as a nation is more adaptable for new comers. With suitable climatic conditions and livable destinations, people can easily blend in with their new environment, which can have a positive impact for international candidates. Also, to say the least, I honestly believe Australia has more opportunities for any students as compared to other nations for the following few reasons:

  • Australian Universities have strong networks with organizations, industries and personnel who belong to respective field of study, which in turn provides platform for students to be more familiar with their career path.
  • With updated and innovative research facilities, one can expect to produce high level of research work in any given field.
  • Many Australian Universities believe in providing independent learning to students. This not only gives us freedom to be creative but also makes us capable of being a remarkable graduate in our study areas.
  • Lastly, statistics of graduates from Australian universities are excellent which further proves the qualitative education one can receive in Australia.

It is approximately 80 kilometers south of Sydney. UOW is globally ranked among top 2% of world universities. Year after year, the university has been building up its prestige among the international students. With astonishing infrastructures and world class facilities, University of Wollongong for me, stood tall and unique from the crowd of other Australian universities. Compared to other universities like Western Sydney University, Victoria University, Charles Darwin University, or University of Melbourne, Wollongong appealed to me more due to several factors. Wollongong truly believes in giving best study environment for students as it is located far off from the boisterous city life. During my research for suitable university, I used the aid of YouTube as well as several forums online, where I got to know more about the UOW family. Hearing from many international students about their experience in UOW from their perspective; it intrigued and excited me further to be a part of UOW family. Not to mention the produce of students from UOW working in renowned organization all over the world, truly reflects the quality of education that student receive, which was recently recognized by Australian Federal Government’s Quality Indicators for learning and Teaching (QILT).

University Recreation and Aquatic Centre (URAC) was also one of the key factors that attracted me more towards UOW. With more than 120 clubs to join, a student can not only learn and excel in his academic career, but truly can gain fruitful, amazing and a life changing experience. Furthermore, UOW being at a location far off from city life, it is more affordable and has a laid-back life style as compared to places like Sydney or even Melbourne.

Future goals and benefits from the course upon returning back to home country, Nepal?

My vision after the completion of my course is simple and straight forward. Though I have lived my entire life in the heart of Kathmandu- the capital of Nepal, I am aware of many issues regarding health that surfaces every once a year throughout various places. Each year the same epidemic rises and kills hundreds of people. Lack of good personnel working in the field as a health officer, breeds such horrible incidents.

Learning a course like Public Health Advanced will equip me with skills necessary to bring about a positive change in health standards of Nepal. Platforms like Nepal Public Health Association (NEPHA), provides the opportunities to implement such skills to tackle health issues. With such reputed jobs, I can easily earn around NRs. 40,000-50,000 per month with additional benefits from the organization. At present, several hospitals including the likes of Bir Hospital (Nepal Academy of Medicinal Science) and Teaching Hospital are in need of personnel with sound knowledge and expertise on Public health, who are required to assess and evaluate health conditions of different places across Nepal. Apart from national institutes, many international organizations such as UNICIEF, SAVE THE CHIDLREN and USAID, organize programs and job opportunities for individuals with ample skills in the field of public health. Some of the job opportunities are opened for graduates of public health in many non-profit organizations as well as private institutes for following positions:

  • Health coordinator
  • Health officer
  • Epidemiologist
  • Health and Nutrition supervisor
  • District health advisor
  • National Program Manager

Thus with wide spectrum of job opportunities and platforms to execute my learned skills and knowledge, I hope to become a valuable candidate to serve people and communities who are in need of quality life.
